Guhyaks belong to demigods - inhabitants of heaven, to ghosts of mountain forests or to ghosts of mountain caves living together with yakshas, rakshasas, kinnaras and other beings in neighbourhoods of the Kailas mount and safeguarding the treasures of Kubera "hidden" there. Quite often (in "Vayu Purana", etc.) guhyaks are imaged in the form of semihorses-semibirds drawing the chariot of Kubera.
Revanta (Raivata), the son of the sun god Surya was considered as their leader. The "Vishnu Purana" describes guhyaks as seers.
